Double Consciousness

Oil on Canvas, June 2019

Inspired by Du Bois's "Double Consciousness," my visual representation depicts the impact of gender and race discrimination on a minority, specifically as an Asian woman. Within the confines of Korean traditional Hanbok attire, I symbolize the societal "mask" forced upon me. The lamb mask represents projected ideals of femininity and innocence, while surrounding figures embody societal expectations constraining my actions. The moth-human figure signifies public influence and stereotypes, and the caterpillar character represents those shaping the next generation.
